Video Audition Guide
Thank you for your interest in joining our choir! To make the audition process as easy and accessible as possible, we are accepting video submissions recorded with the help of your school music teacher or choir conductor.
What You Need to Prepare
You will need to record a single, unedited video that includes the following five elements.
-
Major Scale: Sing a major scale (ascending and descending) in a comfortable range for your voice type, using any solfege syllables (Do-Re-Mi), vowels, or numbers.
-
Minor Scale: Sing a natural or harmonic minor scale (ascending and descending).
-
Aural Test: Your teacher will play a short, 4-bar melody twice. You will sing it back immediately.
-
Rhythm Test: Your teacher will clap a short rhythm. You will clap it back immediately.
-
Prepared Piece ("Baba Yethu"): Sing at least 24 bars of Baba Yethu in your specific voice group (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, or Bass) using the provided SATB score. You may sing this a cappella or with your teacher providing starting pitches/minimal accompaniment.

📋 Instructions for the Music Teacher / Conductor
Thank you for supporting your student's musical journey and assisting us with this audition process. Your expertise ensures we maintain a high standard while saving valuable time for the singers.
Please record the audition in a single, continuous take if possible, ensuring the student's face and upper body are clearly visible.
Your Role During the Video Recording:
-
Introduction: At the start of the video, please have the student state their name, age, and voice part (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, or Bass).
-
Scales: Please provide the starting pitch or a chord establishing the key for both the major and minor scales.
-
Aural Test: Play a brief, simple 4-bar melody on the piano. Play it once, pause for a moment, play it a second time, and then cue the student to sing it back to you.
-
Rhythm Test: Clearly clap a 2-to-4-bar rhythm (incorporating a mix of quarter, eighth, and half notes). Cue the student to clap it back to you.
-
Baba Yethu: Provide the starting pitch or a brief introduction on the piano for their 24-bar excerpt of Baba Yethu. If they are singing with the SATB sheet music, please ensure they are singing the correct line for their voice part. Minimal accompaniment is welcome, but please ensure the student's voice is the most prominent sound in the recording.
Technical Tip: Please check the audio levels before recording to ensure the piano accompaniment does not drown out the student's singing voice.
Thank you for your invaluable help in discovering and nurturing our next generation of choristers!
